In Memorial
Unfortunately, this post is not about a dream…
Grito has died. Grito was the chihuahua owned by M, the elderly Hawaiian lady who lives next door, and was fixture of sorts on our corner of the road. As on any beautiful afternoon, Grito was out in his front yard, leashed to the carport when he was attacked and killed by a Rotweiller that had escaped from a neighbor’s yard down the street. I heard the sound, as did several people in our neighborhood (except, fortunately(!), for M who must have been napping at the time). A few minutes later, the Rotweiller was caught by the owner, and Grito was returned to M for burial. Obviously, she was extremely upset. We had a little community meeting, and after tears, and soft words, the owner was extremely apologetic (in pidgin, which was rather interesting to hear), and promised to send the offending dog to the pound and purchase a new dog for M. Both the owner and M (and some of the other neighbors) are longtime residents, but we had never really talked very much to them. I hope our little huddle helped heal the emotional wounds caused by this event, but it is too bad that it was for this reason that we came together.
I could remark about Hawaiian leash laws, but the simple fact is that large and aggressive dogs are very common in the culture here (especially, of all things, pit bulls), and all pet owners have to be very aware. It is extremely sad when something like this happens, and I am truly thankful that no dog that I have ever loved had to go that way.
Grito was a good dog.
